Various factors contribute to this decline, including the cutting down of trees for firewood, mechanized agriculture, and the decrease in replanting due to cultural factors and the long growth period of shea trees.

 
 
This reduction in the number of shea trees has significant implications for rural economic development and women&#39;s empowerment. The availability of shea is threatened by increasing demand. Mali Shi received a US $2.5 million loan from IFC.

This funding was made possible by the IFC&#39;s Initiative for Conflict-Affected States in Africa (CASA), which was implemented in collaboration with Ireland, the Netherlands, and Norway.

This is a private-sector development program in 13 African countries that aims to:

IFC can invest in more risky projects with a high development impact with GAFSP funding. In addition to financing, the IFC also trains members of women-led cooperatives that work with Mali Shi.

Besides the IFC, the World Bank is actively helping shea cooperatives with targeted grants to enable working women:
